Artistically and technically, the kimono is one of the most aesthetic of the national costumes of the world. Dating back to the eighth century, the kimono continues to be worn in the home and for ceremonial and theatrical costuming in Japanese culture. All kimono have a standard shape. Variations take their name depending on usage, textile and surface design. The shape provides for airiness to counter the humidity of the climate and comfort for freedom of movement. Textiles with elaborate weaves, embroidery, dyeing techniques, hand-painting and fine quality are used in kimono reserved for ceremonial or formal wear. Traditional color and designs to match the season determine the time of year they are worn. For those interested in reading about these garments I suggest:
