This is a traditional scarf called obiage which is worn under a Japanese obi
I found that it makes a fantastic neck scarf! This one is dyed with gorgeous shibori method patterns.
The middle photos show the complexity of the shibori dye process; this one with various shades of pink and mixed floral and geometric patterns on the diagonal.
The flatter parts have a mixed floral and traditional Buddhist pattern jacquard weave and are very soft.
The edges of obiage are not sewn under, they are merely pinked.

Kimono scarves are neck scarves sewn from bolts of Japanese kimono fabric, originally intended to be made into a kimono jacket or robe. The bolts of cloth are narrow, between 12-14", so they are a natural choice for scarf making.
