Vintage Red Silk Shibori Scarf: Japanese Kimono Obiage H2030 As Is
This is a traditional scarf called obiage which is worn under a Japanese obi
I found that it makes a fantastic neck scarf!   This scarf is a lovely bright orange red color with all areas shibori dyed except for the very ends.
The middle photos show the complexity of the shibori dye process where each raised area has been tied off to resist the dye.
The floral patterns in the center have gold metallic threads woven in.
The flatter parts have a mixed floral and traditional Buddhist pattern jacquard weave.
The edges of obiage are not sewn under, they are merely pinked.
There is a stain about 1/2" from the side and 13" from one short end.  Also, the last photo shows a darker area in the fancier part.
Measures just 54" x 16" wide (at full width), shorter than many scarves here
Measures 8" at the narrow areas

  • Kimono scarves are neck scarves sewn from bolts of Japanese kimono fabric, originally intended to be made into a kimono jacket or robe.  The bolts of cloth are narrow, between 12-14", so they are a natural choice for scarf making.
